America's existing housing needs help. Many of the 128 million homes in this country were constructed before modern energy and building codes were established. These homes often suffer from performance problems ranging from inflated energy consumption to poor thermal comfort to indoor air quality issues. BPI is a national standards development and credentialing organization for residential energy efficiency retrofit work - providing training through a network of training affiliate organizations, individual certifications, company accreditations and quality assurance programs. As an independent, not-for-profit organization, BPI brings together leading building science experts from across North America to develop their standards using a consensus-based methodology. BPI helps their partners improve the sustainability, comfort, health, safety, durability and energy efficiency of America's existing houses. |

An ENERGY STAR qualified home uses less energy than a home built to the Texas residential building code and provides homeowners with a better lifestyle for less money. ENERGY STAR qualified homes are tested by an independent third party to ensure they meet the specifications required to receive the ENERGY STAR label. To earn the ENERGY STAR, a home must meet strict guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC), and include additional energy-saving features that typically make them 20-30% more efficient than standard homes. www.energystar.com. |

The Environments For Living® program provides a rigorous set of requirements for homebuilders who've made a commitment to go the extra mile. It's a program that treats a home as a "system of systems" that work together, with limited guarantees* on comfort and heating/cooling energy use. And the Environments For Living Certified Green program adds even more benefits in areas like indoor environmental quality and indoor water conservation. www.environmentsforliving.com |

RESNET stands for Residential Energy Services Network, a group of Certified Energy Auditors/Raters and Qualified Contractors/Builders. Energy Raters and Auditors are professionals trained and certified in energy efficiency, combustion safety and building analysis. They understand how a house functions as a set of inter-related systems, and how an issue or change in one area can impact another area of the home. During an energy audit, an auditor evaluates your home to determine where and how energy is being lost, what systems are operating inefficiently and what cost-effective improvements can be implemented to enhance occupant comfort, make the home more durable and lower utility costs. www.resnet.us |

A HomeAdvice™ test locates potential sources of indoor air pollution in your home. Most homes have more than one source that contributes to indoor air pollution: building materials and furnishings, such as particle board, flaking asbestos insulation, damp carpet, and upholstery; combustible items, such as oil, gas, kerosene, wood, and tobacco; household cleaners, paints and solvents and personal care products; central heating and cooling systems and humidifiers; pesticides and outdoor air pollution from automobiles and factories. All areas of the home can contribute to indoor air pollution. Learn more about the potential problems and how you can help to improve conditions. |
